Fiestas Patrias were celebrated with a strong sense of tradition and community in Humberstone, Victoria, and Colonia Pintados, where families and local communities took part in a variety of activities supported by SQM. Traditional games, music, cueca dancing, and family activities were at the heart of these celebrations, bringing generations together and keeping alive the customs that have historically shaped these communities.
At the historic Humberstone saltpeter works, the Fiestas Patrias Pampinas, organized by Corporación Museo del Salitre with the support of SQM, brought together communities from La Tirana, Pozo Almonte, and Iquique. Children, young people, and older adults rediscovered traditional games such as trompo, emboque, yoyo, and skipping rope, in an experience that connected memories of life in the saltpeter era with new generations while celebrating the cultural heritage of the pampa.
Gary Mérida, SQM’s Head of Community Affairs, said: “It is very important for us to stand alongside our communities and be part of the traditions that bring them together. These celebrations give us an opportunity to connect with local families, share these moments with them, and reaffirm our commitment to continuing to create spaces that strengthen our relationships and keep our traditions alive.”
