Iodine, atomic number 53, is a nonmetallic element on the periodic table. Iodine is a bluish-black crystalline solid with a metallic luster. Unlike some other elements, iodine is not found in blocks or lumps, but rather as shiny flakes or granules that can be easily ground into a powder.
No less than 99.6% of the Earth’s mass can be made up of thirty-two of the chemical elements. The remaining 0.4% is divided among sixty-four elements, all of which are present in trace amounts. Iodine is one of these sixty-four. Although not abundant, iodine is distributed almost everywhere. It is present in rocks, soil, water, plants, animal tissues, and food. Iodine is always found combined with other elements, either in the form of inorganic salts or in fairly complex organic compounds, such as tyrosine.
