Ecobarrios kicks off new series of programs with home gardening workshops in Tocopilla

More than 50 neighbors participated in two day-long practical workshops on home gardening held at the Villa Los Andes Neighborhood Council and at Sargento Aldea Plaza in Tocopilla. During the activities, young people and adults learned about soil preparation, irrigation and planting of different species to take this knowledge back to their homes.

The workshops are part of the Ecobarrios Program, promoted by SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition and the Municipality of Tocopilla, and executed by Verdical, which is celebrating its third series of programs this year. The initiative seeks to promote sustainability and community life and recover public spaces for recreation and environmental care.

Daniela Núñez, Verdical’s project manager, valued the community’s active participation and commented: “This year we want to continue developing activities that activate the area, recover spaces and give new life to the neighborhood councils.”

Along the same lines, Aníbal Abogabir, Community and Public Affairs Manager at SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, highlighted the sense of collaboration sought by the program, remarking: “The idea is that the neighborhood councils get to know each other, collaborate and come up with projects for new recreational spaces for the entire community.”

This activity marked the beginning of a new cycle for the Ecobarrios Program, which will continue to provide opportunities for learning, recreation and community engagement in Tocopilla over the coming months.
