Children Enjoy “Pretending to Be a Miner” Party

More than 1,500 children from Calama enjoyed the traditional “Pretending to Be a Miner” (Jugando a Ser Minera y Minero) party, a free family activity to wrap up Mining Month 2025. Organized by the Antofagasta Industrial Association (AIA), together with the Ministry of Mining and the Regional Government, this initiative sought to bring science and technology closer to the community through games and exploration.

A special moment during the day-long event was the sponsorship ceremony, where SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition reaffirmed its commitment to early childhood by sponsoring three preschools: Sol del Desierto in María Elena, Estrellita del Pacífico and Ardillita in Tocopilla.

About the event, Manuel Ossandón, Head of Community Relations at SQM Iodine Plant Nutrition, said: “We are proud to be here with the educators of the preschools we sponsor in Tocopilla and María Elena. With this initiative we seek to promote childhood development in the Antofagasta Region.

Laura Figueroa, a teacher at the Ardillita preschool in Tocopilla, commented:
“We are very happy to participate in these activities and to invite families to meet our sponsors, which are essential to our educational growth.”

This new edition of “Pretending to Be a Miner” not only brought families together around games and exploration, but also highlighted the fundamental role mining plays in the early education of the region’s future leaders.
