The challenge of operating better is now a reality at the Port of Tocopilla

With an eye on the future and on caring for people, the Port of Tocopilla took a new step in its modernization process by inaugurating the Integrated Operations Center (CIO), marking a before and after in the way it operates. From this new space, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, an operator remotely controls the mechanized arm that transports the cargo from the conveyor belt to the ship, eliminating the need for a worker to be in the old cab installed on the arm itself, out of the line of fire.

This change represents both a technological leap and a concrete step forward in operational safety. Moving the control to a specially designed room gives the operator greater precision, visibility and comfort, reducing risks and improving working conditions. This is a clear example of how well-applied innovation directly impacts the daily lives of those who make the port’s operation possible.

At the inauguration ceremony, our CEO, Pablo Altimiras, commented, “It is a tremendous step forward because it will make loading more productive while also helping us advance in safety, since we can take the person out of the risk zone and that is very important because people matter more than results.”

Javier Tobares, Deputy Operations Manager at the Port of Tocopilla, was extremely proud of this new achievement, expressing: “This set up protects the operator and boosts productivity because times are effectively reduced, distances are also shortened and that makes the operator’s quality of life better.”

But the Integrated Operations Center is just the beginning. In the future, these facilities will also be used to manage truck flows, weighing and most of the key tasks performed at the Port of Tocopilla, solidifying a more efficient, safer and coordinated operating model. This challenge is already underway and reflects our commitment to operational excellence and to keep moving forward, without losing sight of what matters most: people.
