ISO 50001

ISO 50001:2018 is an international standard developed to establish, maintain, and improve an Energy Management System (EnMS) within an organization. Its objective is to optimize energy consumption through a systematic approach that promotes efficiency, safety, and the responsible use of energy.

At SQM, implementing this standard allows us to establish clear energy policies, goals, and objectives, as well as develop action plans to achieve them. This involves identifying opportunities for improvement, reducing energy waste, and optimizing the performance of our processes.

Scope of our ISO 50001:2018 certification

Iodine

  • Nueva Victoria (Mine & Leaching): Caliche extraction for iodine production.
  • Nueva Victoria: Iodine Plant – Iodine production.

Plant Nutrition

  • Coya Sur Mine: Production of potassium nitrates, sodium nitrates, and soluble fertilizers.

Progress Status

2023: In July, the internal audit of ISO 50001 was conducted at the Nueva Victoria and Coya Sur operations by the internal audit team and Roda. The Coya Sur plant achieved ISO 50001:2018 certification, valid from December 27, 2023, to December 26, 2026. See Certification here

2024: The first certification audit was carried out in Nueva Victoria (Mine & Leaching) obtaining the ISO 50001:2018 certification, valid from 2024-01-11 to 2027-01-10. See Certification here

2025: In January, an external follow-up audit for ISO 50001 was conducted at Nueva Victoria (Mine & Leaching) and Coya Sur, and the scope was expanded to include the Iodine Plant. Furthermore, the Nueva Victoria Plant is the first in the world to certify its production under the ISO 50001 standard. See Certification here
